Ukiah Farmers' Market Saturday 6/27/09

Source: Scott Cratty

24-Jun-2009 - Friends of the Farmers' Market

Greetings. Have a favorite farmers' market? If so, you may be keen to know that there are suddenly two different on-line contests to vote for your favorite. One is at www.farmland.org/vote. That one has prizes for markets of different sizes, which is a nice feature. Another is at: http://www.care2.com/farmersmarket?cid=sa1 It was nice to see that the Ukiah Saturday market has already collected a few vote (not counting mine). You can go straight to the page for Ukiah Saturday at: http://www.care2.com/farmersmarket/3750?refer=15227.01.1245470059.658802.

Sad news ... the Grilli's Boysenberries and Ollaliberries are about done ... and the raspberries are sputtering along. So they will not be at market this week and probably not next. Until the blackberries come rolling in. (You may be able to find a few of their berries at the Westside Renaissance Market). If you are a fan of Busalacchi cherries, this week will be your last change to get them.

John Johns asked me to relay that it is Gopher Purge season. Come bye the Johns Family Farm booth at the Ukiah Farmers Market and get your Gopher Purge before they are gone. Gal. pots $5.00, seeds, 20 count $3.00.

Tomorrow's market will have a few special events starting with the return of market favorite Don Willis on accordion. The Ukiah Unified School District will be back with more important information about nutrition and health. Staff from the Ukiah Branch of the Mendocino County Library will provide a reading for the kids. Apropos these water tight times, DripWorks of Willits will be on hand with an information table and product catalogues. Students from the City of 10,000 Buddhas schools will be holding a one-time benefit sale of shirts to support the NGO "Children of Uganda," which provides food, shelter, school supplies, and an education for girls in Uganda.

Now on to the food politics section. Here is a message from the Slow Food USA:

As you know, children who grow up enjoying food that is both delicious and good for them learn healthy eating habits that last throughout their lives. Those habits can start at school - but only if we give schools the resources to serve real food instead of the overly processed fast food that endangers their health.

To make that happen, our leaders in Congress need to hear that when it comes to our children, change can't wait.

That's why we're organizing a National Eat-In for Labor Day, Sept. 7, 2009. On that day, people across America will gather with their neighbors for public potlucks that send our nation's leaders a clear message: It's time to provide our children with real food at school.

Want to help Click here to get started.

For more information go to www.slowfoodusa.org/timeforlunch

See you at the market!

Next Orientation, and why a local Time Bank is important

Source: Mendo Time Bank

22-Jun-2009 -

Next Orientation

The next orientation will be on Wednesday, July 1st at 5:30-6:00 pm (Barbecue starts at 6 pm, Invitation to follow)
RSVP to mendotime@gmail.com, and come to
345 N. Spring st in Ukiah.

This is your last chance to come to come to an orientation before your Time Bank account will be deactivated.  If you can't come on July 1st, email  us to set one up at a different time before July 3rd. If you're traveling and want an extension, just email us, we can be flexible.

Orientations are inspiring, informative. Julia will talk about how Time Banking works,  and why Mendo Time Bank started. Susann will show you how to use the software and post your requests and offers.   We’ll also go over MTB policies and the core values of Time Banking. We apologize for the inconvenience, it became necessary to require orientations. We hope you'll realize the benefits of a local Time Bank and come.

If you haven't been active in the Time Bank, and aren't sure if you want to be,  here is a few paragraphs about why  Time Banking is one of the most effective things we can do to strengthen the community, and why that's important. Also check out the new offerings-- there are many new services, including vegetables and free range meat.

When times get tough, our most important asset is a resilient, productive, and supportive community. More secure than money in the bank, and more long-lasting than storing food and water; creating a more self sufficient community is the smartest investment we can make now.  Mendo Time Bank started with those goals in mind.

A Time Bank is both a system of quantifying community credit, and a network of people that  support each other. Time Banking is a mutual credit system, as members can earn credit anywhere in their community and spend the credit on anything else. Instead of a third party charging interest on the credit, we extend credit to each other without interest.

As the national economy contracts, the supply of money coming in to the local economy decreases, and people spend less money at local businesses. This causes further contraction and job losses. However, because we live in a place with abundant natural resources and local talent, it doesn’t make sense to be dependent on a relatively scarce currency beyond our control.

Having a community credit system based on time avoids the problem of scarcity, because value is created by members as it is needed. It is 100% independent of our national monetary system, making it the most useful for people who are currently undercompensated financially. Furthermore, it is not subject to the shocks and fluctuations of a national currency. One hour always equals one Time Dollar, and our skills and local resources back the value.

There’s no doubt that joining a Time Bank will increase your opportunities for getting your needs met, but it is also about creating the kind of community and economy that will support us no matter what.

Council to take a stand on DDR Wed. night

Source: Save Our Local Economy

2-Jun-2009 -

This Wednesday June 3 the Ukiah City Council will consider a resolution about Developer Diversified Realty's (DDR) ballot measure to change the Masonite site from industrial zoning to a huge shopping mall.

One of the versions of the resolution before the Council will urge the public to vote "No" when DDR's measure goes before the voters in November.
The item will come up early on the Council's agenda, possibly 6:15 p.m.

Please voice your support to the City Council for taking a leadership role in protecting our community character and local economy.

DDR's ballot measure has alarmed the city.  Among the concerns are taking the best remaining industrial site in the county--the 76-acre Masonite property just outside the city--and converting it to another big box retail zone that isn't needed.  The city already has 95 acres of vacant land zoned for retail, including the large parcel in Redwood Business Park that Costco was going to use (until DDR came along).
The city is also concerned about how a giant new mall--as big as Coddingtown--would undermine existing retail districts, about the loss of sales tax revenue that's needed for essential city services, about traffic bottlenecks on North State Street and elsewhere, about water supply, and about the absence of any environmental review since DDR's ballot measure is exempt due to a loophole in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).  All these concerns are described in a memo from the city's planning director that is posted under the agenda item at www.cityofukiah.com
But strong action by the Council isn't guaranteed.

The 5 council members--Doug Crane, Phil Baldwin, Benj Thomas, Mari Rodin, and Mary Anne Landis--have the opportunity to stand up for the community.

If you want to stand up with them, please attend Wednesday night.

SAVE OUR LOCAL ECONOMY (SOLE) is a grassroots local group--"The Home Team"--that has organized to work for a "No" vote on DDR's ballot measure.

To participate in our campaign, contact us at SOLE@pacific.net

Donations to "SOLE" are gratefully accepted at SOLE, P.O. Box 1530, Ukiah, CA 95482.  For amounts of $100 or more, FPPC rules require that we know your employer & position.
